Decans
Leo Decans: Which Leo Are You?
Every Leo wants their heart seen. The decan answers the next question, seen doing what: glowing at the center, telling the story, or building a stage.

Three Leos at the same wedding, and each one shines in a completely different way. The first one is the maid of honor, the warm center every guest somehow ends up hugging at the bar. The second tells the story of how the couple met so well that two strangers at table six ask her to do it again over dessert. The third noticed nobody had planned a send-off, grabbed a box of sparklers from the rental car, and had the whole parking lot lit up before the cake was even cut.
They're all Leo, born within the same four weeks of the year. The difference is where in those thirty degrees the Sun landed. The maid of honor is a 0-to-9-degree Leo. The storyteller is 10 to 19. The sparkler organizer is 20 to 29.
How the fire moves in each third of Leo
Leo is fixed fire. That fixed part is what people miss when they write you off as a one-note performer. Your flame is the hearth everyone gathers around, steady and generous and there year after year, not a match that flares and dies. You need to express yourself and to be recognized for it, and that need runs deep enough that going unseen actually stings.
But the decans change how that fire travels. Each sign's three ten-degree parts borrow from the other two signs of the same element. For Leo, that means the first ten degrees are Leo in its purest concentration, the middle ten take a Sagittarius accent, and the last ten take an Aries accent. The Sun is still a Leo in every case. The accent is secondary, a shading, a flavor stirred into the main dish.
Sagittarius is mutable fire. It carries the flame somewhere new, widens the horizon, makes the warmth mobile. Aries is cardinal fire. It strikes the match, initiates, starts the thing before anyone else has stood up from the table. So the same fixed Leo warmth glows steadily in the first third, roams in the second, and sparks in the third.
Leo I, 0 to 9 degrees: the glow at the center
This is Leo with nothing added. Warm, proud, loyal, creative, and constant in a way people rarely credit because constancy doesn't make a good headline. You light up when your favorite people are watching, and you make them feel like the best audience in the world. You're the one in the front row at a friend's open mic night, clapping loudest, turning to the stranger next to you and whispering, "You see that? You see that?"
Your creativity is personal and specific. The handwriting on every birthday card, the playlist that could only be yours, a style people recognize from across the street without seeing your face. At work you're the steady warmth a team gathers around, the reason people stay late for the celebration when the project finally ships.
In love you're big-hearted and faithful, and you want to be adored back, openly, in front of everyone. You remember who clapped first at your very first show, and that friend has had the best seat at everything you've done since.
The sting when you go unnoticed is real, and it can come out as a sulk, or as a very composed performance of being completely fine. You spent a month on handmade invitations for your dinner party, and one guest mentions them. You bring it up with your sister three times that week. You know exactly which three times you did, and you'd do it all over again.
Leo II, 10 to 19 degrees: the storyteller, with a Sagittarius accent

The Sagittarius influence turns your warmth outward and gives it a passport. Your Leo generosity now travels as story. You're back from a weekend away and within twenty minutes you've handed everyone at brunch an hour-long saga that makes the three who weren't there feel like they went too. You told the story of your lost luggage in Lisbon so well that friends now retell it as their own, and you let them, because hearing it told back is its own kind of applause.
You're generous with recommendations the way other Leos are generous with attention: the book you insist everyone must read, the tiny restaurant you make sound like the best night of the year. You're funnier and looser about status than the first-decan Leo. A crowd sharing the stage doesn't dilute your shine; it multiplies it.
In love you want someone curious about the world who laughs at your stories even the third time through. Even the third time. Especially the third time, because that means they were paying attention the first two.
The growing edge is overpromising. You announced a night with a live band because you once met the drummer at a festival, and now you actually have to message him. The event is on the calendar, the plan is bigger than your schedule, and the only person who can talk you down is the friend who says, "Okay, when, exactly?" That friend saves your life more than once a season. You forgive them instantly, because you're generous like that.
Leo III, 20 to 29 degrees: building your own stage, with an Aries accent
The Aries shading makes you the most competitive and the most direct of the three. You would rather build your own stage than wait to be invited onto one. You start the project, call the meeting, found the club, and then you absolutely enjoy the applause. Nobody had planned anything for the summer, so you started a softball team, designed the jerseys, and named yourself captain. You lose the potluck cook-off by one vote and demand a rematch before the plates are cleared.
At work you're a natural founder who lives for launch week, the part where the thing goes from a document to a real thing in the world. You keep score in everything, from board games to fundraising totals, and you're gracious in victory about half the time.
In love you do the asking. You want someone who keeps pace and argues back, because a partner who just nods makes you feel like you're performing to an empty room.
The edge is impatience with slow people, slow processes, and your own long middles. Somewhere there's a club you founded three years ago, still going strong under someone else's management, and you've already started two more. You don't look back. You're already mid-sentence telling someone about the new one.
Which Leo are you, by the numbers
Open your chart in any chart app. It lists every planet beside its sign and degree. Find the Sun's row. The degree tells you everything.
The trick is the tens digit. No tens digit means first decan (0 through 9). A 1 in front means second (10 through 19). A 2 in front means third (20 through 29). An 11-degree-15-minute Leo Sun is second decan, and those fifteen minutes don't change it. You don't get to pick the one that sounds most like you tonight. The number is the number.
Birthdays early, in the middle, and late in Leo season usually line up with the decans in that order, but the exact day Leo season starts drifts a bit between years, so the degree in your chart gets the final call. The Sun moves roughly one degree per day, which means a birthday almost always settles it. If yours is right on a decan boundary, the birth time pins it down.
Two degrees worth a note. A planet at 0 degrees has just stepped into Leo's light, trying its confidence on for size, delighted and a little unsure. At 29 degrees it's a seasoned performer who knows every trick in the act and wants to finish the show and take the bow. Neither one changes what Leo does. They add a little hesitation at the start, or a little urgency at the finish.
Your Leo Mars, Moon, or rising
The three shades aren't just a Sun phenomenon. Any planet in Leo takes them. Mars at 4 degrees Leo pursues goals with steady pride and the stamina to outlast everyone. At 16 degrees it chases something bigger with a crusader's grin, convinced the quest itself is the point. At 27 degrees it competes openly and wants to win this week, not this year.
For the Moon and the rising, a birthday alone can't sort the decan. The Moon changes signs every two to two and a half days, which means it crosses a full decan in less than a day. The rising degree crosses a decan in roughly forty minutes on average, faster for some signs and slower for others. Without the time you were born, those decans stay unread. If you know your birth time, your chart app already shows those degrees.
The photos come back
The wedding photos arrive, and the three of you are in them, unmistakably.
The first-decan Leo is in the center of every group shot, arms around two friends, beaming, holding the frame together like she planned it. The photo she frames is the one where the bride is mid-laugh and she's the reason.
The second-decan Leo is caught mid-story, hands in the air, three people leaning in so hard they're nearly spilling champagne. She frames the one where her mouth is open around a word that will become legendary at the next reunion.
The third-decan Leo barely appears in any of them because she was out front lighting sparklers, her phone in someone else's hand. The photo she frames is a blurry selfie from the parking lot, sparklers arcing over everyone's heads, and her face is just visible in the corner, grinning like she built the whole evening from scratch.
Because that's the difference. Seen doing what, and how. And all three answers are still, unmistakably, Leo.
