Which Element Dominates Your Chart? How to Count Yours and What It Means
Counting your elements takes six placements, a pen and about five minutes. Here's how to tally yours and read a lean, a spread or a gap in your chart.
⟶Count your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and rising by element, and see whether your chart leans fire, earth, air or water and which element is lightest.
Each of the six placements sits in a sign, and each sign belongs to an element: fire is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; earth is Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; air is Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; water is Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The tool gives each placement one point. Jupiter and the planets beyond it stay out because they spend years in a sign and are shared with everyone born near you.
The leading element is your first reflex, and the lightest is a skill you may build on purpose. Try one small thing from the lightest element for a week. Since the Sun, Mercury and Venus often sit close together, a lean built only from them is worth checking against your Moon and rising.
As a rule of thumb, three or more of the six placements in one element is a lean. If no element has more than two, it's a spread, and an element with none is a gap.
Without a time there's no rising sign, so the count has one fewer placement. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, that placement is uncertain too.
No. A gap is a skill you learned by hand instead of by reflex, and plenty of people get good at their missing element for exactly that reason.
